Club Profile
U of L Alumni Club of Greater St. Louis
The University of Louisville Alumni Club of
Greater St. Louis
is located in the heart of
America in St. Louis, Missouri.  Our club
encompasses members in Missouri and Illinois.
There are over 700 U of L alumni in the
surrounding area.

We would like to extend a warm invitation to
all area residents, whether a U of L alumn or a
Cardinals supporter to join our friendly group.

We regularly get together for game watches,
where we root for the Cardinals and enjoy the
camaraderie.  We also do numerous social
events, the best of which is our outstanding
Derby Party.  This year's Derby Party marked
the 23rd consecutive year in which we held a
Derby Party!

lowdown.
University Updates

Clyde Jenkins (our President-Elect) and I just returned from spending a few days at
UofL for the annual Leadership Weekend produced by the Alumni Association.
During that time we had an opportunity to learn more about what our school has been
doing over the last year and the areas of focus that our school will be working to
achieve over the next ten years.  Here are some of the highlights for you:

General Information
  • The average ACT score of the student body has increased from 21.8 in 1998 to
24.5 in 2008, the highest in its history.  The State of Kentucky average is 19.4,
whereas the national average is 21.1.
  • In 1998 there were 1,734 undergraduate degrees awarded; this increased to
    2,428 in 2008.  The goal for 2020 is 3,074.
  • Over the last three years, University of Louisville has had 7 Fullbright Scholars.
  • In 2002, the University of Louisville received $42 million in grants; in 2009 UofL
    secured over $95 million.
  • In 2009, for the second year in a row, President Ramsey refused his 6-figure
bonus in order to keep funds in the school to assist with the achievements UofL
    wants to attain.

Those are impressive stats that we, as Alumni of University of Louisville, can be
proud of!

We had an opportunity to speak with a few of the Deans of various schools: Mickey
Wilhelm of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, Dr. Terry Singer with the Kent
School of Social Work, and Blake Haselton with the College of Education and Human
Development.  Here are a few highlights from those meetings:

J.B. Speed School of Engineering
  • In 2009 the School welcomed 354 freshman, 68% were from outside the
immediate area and 19% were female.  Their average ACT score was 28.01.
  • Total enrollment is 1940 of which 1468 is undergraduate, 247 are working on
their master’s degrees, and 225 are seeking their MS or PhD.
  • On January 26, 2009, the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research and
Environmental Stewardship was assigned to UofL by Governor Beshear, aided
by a $20 million dollar bequest by Hank and Becky Conn.

Kent School of Social Work
  • 7 Faculty Presidential Awards have been received by its staff over the last five
    years.
  • Most graduate Dean’s Awards received by students for academic excellence
than all the other Schools of UofL.
  • With the support of the faculty and students, UofL has secured a new “first” in
our nation: an Endowed Chair in Oncology Social Work.  This position supports
the National Cancer Institute in developing service and funded research related
to psycho-social needs on individuals and families impacted by cancer.  This
honor positions Kent School of Social Work to be a leader in the field of social
    work and oncology.

College of Education & Human Development
  • The Department of Teaching and Learning was chosen as the only department
in the country to receive the Paul Weber Award.
  • Ranked 71st in the nation out of 230!
  • Top specialty interests that are being sought: Exercise Physiology, Human
    Resources Management and Teaching.
  • Have been accredited by the American Psychological Association and just
finished the 7-year process of being accredited by the National Council for
    Accreditation of Teacher Education.

As you can see, great things are happening at UofL!
